Cotta Properties was established in 1925 by Joe Cotta Sr. More recently, in 1986, after many successful years of growing wine grapes and other agricultural commodities, Joe Cotta Sr.'s grandsons, John and James Cotta started producing award-winning wines under their Las Viñas label.
The Bernardus Estate purchased in 1989 was the fifth winery to establish vineyards in the Carmel Valley. The vineyards consist of 220 acres that are surrounded by the Santa Lucia Mountains. The vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc.
