In 1969, Cecil and Christine staked their claim in the wine grape business by purchasing 24 acres of old vine Zinfandel near the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. They were originally going to use the vineyard as a place to retire to, but when grape prices skyrocketed in the early 1970's, the De Loach's decided to acquire additional vineyard land. For several years they watched others make wine from their grapes before making the decision to produce wine under the De Loach label. Thus, the wine production began in 1975. Main varietals produced at the winery are Chardonnay, Zinfandel, White-Zindandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Gewurztraminer and Fume Blanc.

J. Gundlach and Co. was originally established in 1858 by Jacob Gundlach and Emil Dresel, who produced premium Bacchus Table Wines from Rhinefarm grapes. In 1864, with the winery experiencing rapid growth, Gundlach looked to his son-in-law, Charles Bundschu for help with business administration and marketing. The wine company continued to grow and in the mid 1870's annual production reached 150,000. Gundlach Bundschu Wine Company continued to prosper through the turn of the century. However, in 1906 the San Francisco earthquake and fire destroyed the family's property. In 1973 the Gundlach Bundschu winery reopened with a 600 case production of estate Zinfandel.

While Joel Peterson was rounding his first grapes before the threatening rain could destroy them, he thought the cawing of the ravens at him were noting the ending to his young winery. However, after all the grapes were brought to safety, Peterson realized the ravens had actually been encouraging him to finish before the downpour. In 1976, in honor of the ravens, he named the winery Ravenswood.
