For a great "classic" breakfast, try Sambos. It's the only remaining Sambos of the Sambo’s Pancake House that opened in 1957 and is run by the grandson of the original owner. In the early '70's there were over 1,000 Sambo Pancake Houses across the country. They had some problems when they were accused of "racism" for depicting Little Black Sambo. The owner was far from racist hiring all types of people. The Santa Barbara location has quite a history and worth a visit. Great breakfast and fair prices.

I remember the old Sambo's back in the day. The pancakes are outstanding, and the think the chain really did get a bad name as being racist when they really weren't. As I recall, they also have a delightful Patty Melt and a wonderful burger as well. Did Sambo's become Denny's? Someone told me that recently and I didn't believe them. Sambo's reminds me of the old reliable diners that you encounter back on the East Coast. It's good, old-fashioned solid American comfort food prepared and served with love and compassion. Next time I am in the area, you'll be sure that I will give this place a try for nostalgic reasons if nothing else.

Sambo's is a dinosuar. Don't they realize that the whole name is highly racist? They should change the name immediately. Sure, it's a great spot for a solid breakfast, but what about being politically correct? Isn't that more important now than ever, since we now have a black president? I love their pancakes and their French toast, but they need to change the name!

I also use to love Sambo's. It' a "classic." BTW, most of the Sambos did have to close because of their name. I think they should just let this one be.
Here's an interestng article about Sambo's.

Yes, I heard the same thing--so it's confirmed. It's like the NFL Washington Redskins or baseball's Cleveland Indians. In this day and age, people need to be more sensitive to other races, and having a place named Sambos just doesn't cut it, even in sleepy little Santa Barbara. I am really surprised that they've gotten away with it for so many years. The food is good, the service is great and I'm sure the people who own it aren't racists, but they should change it for good will's sake. Just think of all the positive press exposure they'd get if they changed the name!

How quickly we chastise out of ignorance. Concerning the Cleveland Indians team name:

With the departure of Nap Lajoie, the team needed a new name, so it decided to revive a name the old 1890's NL team had once use, Indians in honor of Louis Sockalexis, a Penobscot Indian, who played for the team in 1897. ( http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/al/clevind/indians.html )

Why do we always assume the name was used to slander rather than honor a Native American "Indian". Sockalexis was one of the most beloved players in all of Cleveland baseball history.
